The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

Embassy Asylum Concerns
