In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
